The Queensland Government has responded to pressure from United Voice to address serious safety concerns at a privately run prison by announcing that the facility will be placed in public hands.
For years United Voice has been aware that overcrowding and neglectful management practices by private US contractor GEO have combined to create a dangerous environment for our corrections officer members at the prison where officers often fear for their lives.
Welcoming the announcement, United Voice Queensland Branch President Sharron Caddie said it showed the government had acknowledged the concerns of workers.
“We will continue to campaign for improved safety and increased staffing levels at the prison until GEO is removed,” she said.
Safety and security is a fundamental concern of all workers in every work place – whether it’s a hospital, school, club or prison. Every worker has the right to go to work and come home safely.
