Submission on constitutional recognition

Submission on constitutional recognition

SUBMISSION BY UNITED VOICE TO THE JOINT SELECT COMMITTEE ON CONSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION RELATING TO ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLES. [CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD]

Our membership includes hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, working across our industries, including in Aboriginal Health, Aboriginal Early Childhood Education and Care and Aboriginal Home Care.

Our union has long supported the struggles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia for equality and self-determination.

We supported the Gurindji strike at Wave Hill, we campaigned for a ‘yes’ vote in the 1967 referendum, and we walked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the 1988 Long March of ‘Justice, Freedom and Hope’.
Today, we call on the Joint Select Committee to recognise and endorse the communal expression of self-determination expressed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

This submission is based on conversations with our Indigenous members.
